Outrage as first rain washes away road Soludo commissioned a week ago

First rain in Anambra State on Monday washed away Ochanja Market Road in Onitsha constructed and commissioned by the State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, about a week ago.

The development came barely two days after a governorship aspirant in the state on the platform of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Valentine Ozigbo had tagged State government contractors “Soludo and Sons’ because of their alleged lack of competence

Soludo had assured that any road built by his administration would last for at least 20 years.

But an afternoon downpour on Monday washed away portions of the Ochanja Market Road.

Soludo had commissioned the road barely a week ago to showcase as one of his achievements after two years in office.

Ochanja Market is in the Woliwo community in Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

A viral video of the washed road which started trending on Monday night showed the coated asphalts piled out with pieces scattered and water-logged on some parts of the road.

Labour Party (LP) stalwart and former Governorship candidate in Anambra State, Mr Valentine Ozigbo, had complained about the quality of the roads being constructed by Governor Soludo, tagging the constructions companies “Soludo and Sons” in reference to their lack of expertise.

Meanwhile, residents had expressed their concerns over the poor and shoddy jobs the administration of Governor Soludo is executing in the state despite paying billions of taxpayers money for the projects.

They wondered how 20 minutes of rainfall could have caused the massive washing away of the road constructed barely one week ago, and what would happen by June in other roads the government had executed.

One of the posts accompanying the video, partly read: “Prof Chukwuma Soludo’s one week old Road washed away in a spit of a second.

“The “Dubai-Taiwan” Ochanja market road in Onitsha constructed with billions of Anambra taxpayers’ money has just been washed away by just one episode of 20 minutes rainfall on Monday 25th of March 2024

“The rainfall exposed the nature of poor quality jobs executed by the government.”

It added, “Just a few weeks ago, at the same Ochanja Market, a storey building under construction by the same government collapsed, killing an unknown number of people.

“By the time the rainfall is fully established in June, more poorly executed construction by the Anambra State Government could be laid bare for the blind to see.”

Meanwhile, the state government hasn’t responded to the viral video as to why the incident affected the market.
