Professor Cliff Nwana of Nnamdi Azikiwe University has urged Nigerians to embrace an ethical revolution to address the country’s leadership accountability and economic growth challenges.
He made this call at the 2024 Patrons and Veterans Day & Accountability Conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council.
Prof Nwana’s keynote address, “Leadership Accountability and Economic Growth: The Crucial Role of Media,” highlighted the need for ethical, educational, and judicial revolution, as well as prudent management of fiscal and monetary policies.
He emphasized that Nigeria requires an ethical revolution rather than a political one.
The event, held at the Godwin Ezeemo International Press Centre, featured leaders and experts from various fields.
Chairman of the occasion, Chief Emeka Onwudinjo, tasked the media with living up to expectations and disseminating accurate information.
NUJ Chairman, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, reminded the society that the media serves to build a formidable society.
Odogwu, said:.”The media profession is not just all about news writing, but more about fostering a culture of transparency, ensuring that leaders are held to the highest standards, and providing the public with the information they need to engage meaningfully with the world around them.”
He also reminded the society that the media are there to serve, but are not infallible; hence the need for advice, correction, and support from members of the public in order to perform better and succeed in the discharge of their duty towards building a formidable society.
Here’s a rewritten version of the text with some minor adjustments for clarity and flow:
Ukpa Ewa Eke, Chairperson of the Planning Committee, explained that the event aimed to explore the crucial role of leadership accountability in driving economic growth and how the media can serve as a key driver in this dynamic.
She emphasized that the media’s responsibility extends beyond news writing, focusing on promoting transparency, holding leaders to the highest standards, and empowering the public with the information needed to engage meaningfully with their surroundings.
Guests, including government officials and business leaders, shared their initiatives and achievements, calling for stronger partnerships with the media.
The event honoured four individuals for their selfless and humanitarian services: Iyom Obikwelu, Hon. Kingsley Uyammadu, Chief Tabansi Alloysius, and High Chief Benjamin Nworji.
