A Nigerian activist, Boniface Okonkwo, residing in South Africa, has been held in Anambra prison since January 3, 2024.

Okonkwo claims that his arrest was instigated by Anambra State businessman, Chief Emeka Offor.

According to Okonkwo’s statement, he was arrested at the Area Command in Oraifite, Ekwusigo Local Government Area, while visiting home for the Christmas holidays.

As of today, he has spent 156 days in detention, with his case facing multiple delays due to legal issues and the recent NLC strike.

Okonkwo’s case is scheduled to be heard again on June 13 and 20, 2024, at the Nnewi High Court, where he will face charges related to cybercrime. Supporters of Okonkwo are seeking a peaceful resolution to the matter.

The circumstances surrounding Okonkwo’s arrest and detention are still unclear.

The case has garnered attention from local communities, with some expressing concerns about the lengthy detention period and the need for a fair trial.

Okonkwo’s supporters have called for a peaceful resolution, and the matter is being closely watched by human rights groups and local organizations.

The Anambra State government and legal authorities have not commented on the case, and it is unclear what evidence exists to support the charges against Okonkwo.

The Nnewi High Court is expected to hear the case on the scheduled dates, and a verdict will be delivered in due course.

It is essential to remember that individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty, and the legal process should be allowed to run its course.

The case has raised questions about the role of human rights activists and the need for fair treatment
