Gas Explosion Rocks Onitsha, Kills One, Injures many

A devastating gas explosion occurred at Bridgehead Onitsha, Anambra State, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.

According to eyewitnesses, the blast happened at a plumbing market along Uga Street when a welding gas cylinder exploded due to excessive heat.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, stating that police operatives attached to the Onitsha Head Bridge Divisional Police Headquarters collaborated with good Samaritans to rescue six victims, who are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

Unfortunately, one person lost their life in the explosion and has been deposited in a morgue.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has taken steps to secure the area and prevent opportunistic crimes.

He also issued safety tips to prevent similar incidents, emphasizing the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of gas cylinder equipment, secure storage, and adherence to manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidelines.

The police commissioner urged the public to prioritize safety when handling gas cylinders and equipment to avoid such tragic incidents in the future.
