Chief Ebuka Onunkwo has pledged to change the pattern of political representation in Anambra South Senatorial District, promising people-centred leadership anchored on dignity, inclusiveness and respect for constituents.

Onunkwo, who spoke while addressing supporters at his residence in Ihembosi, Anambra State, said politics should go beyond election campaigns and the distribution of money and consumables.

He argued that elected representatives should earn the people’s confidence through genuine engagement, responsible leadership and sustained commitment to their welfare.

He criticised what he described as a political culture in which citizens endure long hours at campaign events only to receive token incentives in exchange for their support.

He said the people deserved to be treated with dignity and regarded as partners in the development of the district.

The gathering attracted numerous support groups and political associates, with accreditation reportedly extending beyond the scheduled time because of the large turnout.

According to his camp, many supporters had independently organised themselves into groups to promote his political aspirations across communities in the senatorial district, contributing their personal resources despite their financial limitations.

Beyond his promise of a different approach to representation, Onunkwo urged his supporters to refrain from attacking opposition parties, particularly the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

He said his political ambition was not driven by hostility towards rival parties and pledged that, if elected, he would serve all constituents regardless of their political affiliations.

He also promised to extend his proposed empowerment programmes and development initiatives to APGA supporters and members of other political groups, insisting that public office should serve the collective interests of the people rather than a particular political camp.

He maintained that effective representation required continuous engagement, mutual respect and a commitment to community progress, not merely mobilising supporters during elections and abandoning them afterwards.

Onunkwo’s message comes amid political competition in Anambra South, where constituency development and the quality of representation remain important issues.

He is seeking to distinguish his proposed leadership style from what he considers transactional politics, placing dignity, accessibility and cross-party cooperation at the centre of his message.
