The Anambra State Government has been urged to immediately disarm the Anambra Vigilant Group (AVG) operatives loyal to the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah to prevent potential security breaches and maintain peace in the state.

In a statement issued in Awka, the state capital, the Anambra Security Network (ASN) warned that allowing these operatives to bear arms could lead to abuse and compromise state security.

The ASN’s call for disarming the vigilantes comes amidst concerns about the potential for violence and insecurity in the state, particularly in the wake of Senator Ubah’s demise.

The group emphasized that since the operatives are not paid a statutory monthly salary, they may be tempted to use their arms for criminal activities when starved of money, thereby compromising the security of the state.

ASN President, Col. Jude Obi (Rtd), stressed that disarming the vigilant operatives has become imperative to checkmate criminals, as some may use the arms for criminal activities in the state.

He noted that allowing them to bear arms would create opportunities for firearm abuse, ultimately compromising state security.

Col. Obi suggested two options: either disarm the operatives or incorporate and absorb them into the mainstream State AVG.

This, according to him, would allow for effective monitoring and prevent potential security threats.

The Anambra Security Network warned that allowing operatives to bear arms without a statutory monthly salary amounts to sowing seeds of gross insecurity.

“When starved of money, they may use their arms for upkeep, compromising state security. To avoid this, remove arms and ammunition from them,” the group said.
