– Cuts off community from six others
By Esindu Jacobs
The people of Achina community in Anambra State, have cried out that gully erosion will wipe them out from the planet earth, if help refuses to come their way immediately
The erosion menace has already cut off the community from six other neighbouring communities in the area
The communities are Onneh, Ogboji, Umunze, Umuchu, Ajalli and Arondizogu in Imo State among others
Also, the Christ Anglican Church building, Achina Town hall and over 50 residential buildings are being threatened by the monster
As a result, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress APC, who defied the heavy downpour yesterday visited the place and wept
The President General of Achina Town Union ATU, Hon Henry Ezeunara, said the community had suffered greatly without help from State government
He said anytime it rained in the area nobody would leave his or house to avoid being drowned, adding that their lives and buildings were at risks
Ezeunara, maintained that the only help the community had received was some palliative works from one of their sons, Chief Modestus Umenzekwe
Chief Modestus Umenzekwe, who accompanied Senator Andy Uba to the place alongside other community leaders, said the governments at all levels just abandoned them without help .
He told The Razor News that the residents whose buildings were being threatened by the menace don’t sleep in their houses at night again for fear of being submerged at night
The community leader, pleaded with Anambra State and Federal governments to come to their rescue before the community became history, adding that the situation had become unbearable for them
For Senator Andy Uba, the governorship candidate of APC, the community needed urgent attention, adding that it was the reason they should partner with the party at the federal level to solve their problems
He said if voted in during the November 6 governorship election, that tackling the Achina erosion menace would be one of the first projects the APC government would do in Anambra
Uba said, “this is one of the reasons we’ve been begging our people to connect to the center, I promise to follow up with the move already made by one of your sons Umenzkwe, in making sure you are freed from the bondage
“And again, it is the reason why the community should vote for APC in November to solve such problems and by the grace of God, we shall win the election ” Uba said
The Community’s Women leader, Mrs Anthonia Ekwebele, Chairman Achina Polical Action Committee, Ichie John Okpala, while speaking with The Razor News , lamented that their farm produce could no longer be sold outside their community as a result of the erosion menace
