The candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the November 8, 2025, Anambra State governorship election, John Chuma Nwosu, has called for a more inclusive democracy, improved security architecture, and greater deployment of technology in governance as Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day.
Nwosu, an advocate of good governance, inclusive development, security, and innovation, made the call in a Democracy Day message issued on Friday.
In the statement, he joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating the ideals of freedom, justice, popular participation, and good governance associated with June 12, while paying tribute to those who fought to defend the country’s democratic rights.
According to him, the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists serve as a reminder that democracy is not a gift but a responsibility that must be continuously protected and strengthened.
Nwosu, however, noted that despite Nigeria’s democratic progress, several challenges continue to threaten the nation’s stability and development, particularly insecurity.
He expressed concern over the growing wave of insecurity across different parts of the country, warning that no democracy can thrive where citizens live in fear.
Nwosu advocated strengthening the nation’s security architecture through improved intelligence gathering, greater community participation in security matters, and deliberate efforts to address the social and economic conditions that fuel crime and violence.
The governorship hopeful also emphasized the need for a democracy that accommodates all segments of society, stressing that every Nigerian, irrespective of age, gender, religion, ethnicity, social status, or physical ability, should enjoy equal opportunities and meaningful participation in governance.
He argued that Nigeria’s democratic system would become stronger when women, youths, persons living with disabilities, and other marginalized groups are adequately represented in leadership positions and decision-making processes.
On the role of technology in governance, Nwosu said digital innovation remains critical to the future of democratic development. He noted that technology could significantly improve transparency, public service delivery, citizen engagement, education, healthcare, economic growth, and electoral integrity.
He therefore urged governments at all levels to expand internet access, invest in digital skills acquisition, and leverage technology to make governance more accountable and responsive to the needs of the people.
He further stated that democracy should not be viewed merely as the conduct of periodic elections but as a system that guarantees justice, strengthens institutions, expands opportunities, and enables citizens to pursue better lives with dignity and confidence.
As Nigerians mark Democracy Day, Nwosu called on citizens to renew their commitment to unity, peace, responsible citizenship, and the values that sustain democratic governance.
He expressed optimism that through collective effort, Nigeria could become safer, more inclusive, technologically advanced, and prosperous for present and future generations.
Nwosu also urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, actively engaged in the democratic process, and committed to the task of nation-building.
He prayed for God’s blessings upon Anambra State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
