Sunday Sermon: Obi and Umeh — What God Has Put Together, Let No Man Put Asunder

Today, July 19, is no ordinary date in Anambra State. It marks the birthdays of two of the state’s most enduring political figures whose lives and careers have remained remarkably intertwined.

Peter Obi was born on July 19, 1961, while Senator Victor Umeh was born exactly one year later.

Obi hails from Agulu and Umeh from neighbouring Aguluzigbo, both in Anaocha Local Government Area.

Historians maintain that the two communities were originally one before historical and administrative developments separated them, making their shared ancestry as compelling as their shared birthday.

Perhaps it was providence that also brought them together politically. Both men had their political pupillage under the late Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, whose philosophy of service and justice shaped a generation of leaders.

Since then, for more than two decades, Obi and Umeh have journeyed through Nigeria’s turbulent political landscape almost as inseparable allies.

They have had their disagreements, but like true brothers, they have always found a way to manage their differences without allowing them to destroy a relationship built on trust and shared purpose.

Their political fortunes have largely moved symbiotically in tandem. While Umeh spent about a decade as National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Peter Obi served two successful terms as Governor of Anambra State on the platform of the same party, earning national acclaim for prudent governance and unprecedented investments in education and healthcare. Umeh provided political leadership for the party, while Obi gave it administrative credibility.

Their partnership endured beyond APGA. Umeh was elected Senator for Anambra Central, while Obi expanded his political horizon, contesting for Nigeria’s presidency after previously serving as a vice-presidential candidate. His 2023 presidential bid on the Labour Party platform attracted over six million votes nationwide, including victory in the Federal Capital Territory and Lagos.

Many Nigerians remain convinced that the outcome did not reflect the popular will. That same political movement also returned Umeh to the Senate, once again placing the Anaocha brothers on the same political path.

Recent political realignments have only reinforced that alliance. After participating in the coalition that emerged through the African Democratic Congress, both eventually pitched their tents with the Nigeria Democratic Congress, where Peter Obi is the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election and Victor Umeh seeks another term in the Senate. History, it seems, keeps bringing them together.

Beyond politics, however, lies an even stronger bond. Both men have demonstrated an uncommon commitment to education and human development. Peter Obi has become nationally renowned for his consistent support for schools, hospitals and other public institutions across Nigeria. Umeh, on his part, has provided scholarships to more than 3,000 students, giving thousands of young Nigerians opportunities that might otherwise have been beyond their reach. Their shared belief that education is the surest path to societal progress distinguishes them beyond partisan politics.

The words of Scripture readily come to mind: “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” Though spoken in the context of marriage, the principle applies equally to relationships founded on trust, loyalty and shared purpose.

In a political environment where alliances are often driven by convenience and abandoned at the slightest provocation, the Obi-Umeh partnership stands out as a refreshing example of steadfastness.

As both men celebrate another birthday today, Anambra has every reason to celebrate not only two accomplished sons but also a partnership that has endured the tests of time.

Whether one agrees with their politics or not, their loyalty to each other and their shared commitment to public service deserve recognition.

Indeed, these two distinguished sons of Anaocha appear to have been joined not merely by geography, politics or history, but by providence.

And what God has put together, let no man put asunder.

Ad multos annos.
