The governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has said that his government has succeeded in taking arms off the hands of those who are not supposed to handle them. The governor said he did this by empowering the police and other security agencies in the state and also training members of the vigilante service to help the police and disarmed those who should not carry arms in the first place. The governor who was speaking with journalists in his Aguleri home said that by doing these, he has provided security for lives and properties in the state, and also sent away the fear and stigma associated previously with the state which made its indigenes to stay away from it. The sited that the Christmas celebration witnessed massive return by indigenes of the state, and that with the advent of night life, people freely drove around without fear, unlike was the case before. “The few cases of disturbances we have registered with security are people who come from outside to strike and leave, we are however not relenting in that area as we have always gone after them. “Places like Upper Iweka were no-go-areas, but today the place is safe and hoodlums have been sent on the run. We will continue that way and will never relent. Already we have patriotic individuals from the state who are supporting us. Like Emeka Okwuosa has just donated a gunboat. “That gun boat will help to secure our waterways and stem the tide of people shipping in small arms for nefarious purposes into the state.” Obiano said. The governor also disclosed that former minister of Aviation and the Peoples Democratic Party candidate for senate in Anambra North senatorial zone has been appointed as the head of the state airport project, which he said will be sited at Umuleri, Anambra East local government area. He reminded that there is no rift between he and his predecessor, Chief Peter Obi, and that he has been working hard to ensure that none of the projects left unfinished by the former governor was abandoned.
