The passing of Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, a champion of democracy and former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Electoral Commission, leaves an indelible mark on Nigeria’s electoral landscape.
Born on October 2, 1941, Prof. Nwosu dedicated his life to promoting democracy, integrity, and transparency.
Prof. Nwosu’s remarkable legacy is characterized by his instrumental role in shaping Nigeria’s electoral commission.
His crowning achievement, conducting the June 12, 1993, presidential election, remains Nigeria’s freest and fairest.
Despite military pressure, he stood firm, ensuring the election’s integrity and securing his place in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Beyond that pivotal moment, Prof. Nwosu introduced the Option A4 voting system, promoting transparency and accountability.
His books, including “Laying the Foundation for Nigeria’s Democracy,” inspired generations of electoral reformers and democracy advocates.
To honour his memory and cement his legacy, naming the INEC Headquarters after Prof. Nwosu would recognize his instrumental role.
Alternatively, establishing the Humphrey Nwosu Institute for Election Studies would promote research, innovation, and capacity-building in electoral processes.
The institute would conduct research on electoral patterns, voting behaviour, and democratic politics, informing policy and promoting electoral integrity.
The Anambra State Government, under Prof. Chukwuma Soludo’s leadership, should lead in honouring Prof. Nwosu’s legacy. His efforts deserve recognition and celebration, both nationally and in his home state, Anambra.
We urge the Federal Government to consider establishing the Humphrey Nwosu Institute for Election Studies, facilitate international partnerships to enhance electoral reforms, and ensure its research informs policy decisions, thereby strengthening Nigeria’s democratic processes.
As we bid farewell, we remember Prof. Nwosu’s unwavering dedication.
His legacy will continue to guide Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Rest in peace, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu. Your contributions to Nigeria’s democracy will endure.
