EDITORIAL: Shackled Freedom: Nigeria’s 64th Anniversary

Editorial

By Tony Okafor

Today, Nigeria marks its 64th independence anniversary, but the mood is far from celebratory.

Nigerians wear mournful faces, weighed down by lingering challenges.

The harsh economic reality, skyrocketing unemployment, and pervasive insecurity have stifled any joy.

Nigeria’s economic struggles are dire. The inflation rate has soared to 20.52%, its highest in 17 years, while unemployment stands at 33.3%.

The Naira’s depreciation and foreign exchange scarcity have crippled businesses, with the manufacturing sector contributing a paltry 12% to GDP.

Agricultural development is crucial, as Nigeria spends over $6 billion annually on food imports.

Investing in irrigation systems, subsidies for farmers, and agricultural hubs can boost food production and reduce importation.

The cost of governance remains alarming, with recurrent expenditure accounting for 76% of the 2023 budget.

Reviewing the presidential system and bicameral legislature can reduce costs and enhance efficiency.

Insecurity and corruption persist, with kidnappings increasing by 50% and Nigeria ranking 154th out of 180 countries in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index.

President Tinubu’s reforms, such as granting autonomy to local governments and promoting Compressed Natural Gas, are steps in the right direction.

However, more needs to be done. As Senator George Akume emphasized, Nigeria’s diversity should be a strength, not a weakness. Leaders must unite to foster peace and unity.

Today, Nigerians don’t need celebrations; they need solutions. Leaders must prioritize citizens’ welfare and take bold steps towards a brighter future. This somber anniversary should serve as a wake-up call for collective action and responsible leadership. Time to act is now.
