Anambra youths under the aegis of Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN),
Anambra State chapter has condemned the recent spate of killing in the state.
The group in a press conference on Thursday urged youths of the state to stand up against activities that may cause the disruption of the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
The speaker of the assembly, Mr Ikenna Nwobi who addressed journalists in Awka said the group was pained about the recent killings in the state because if it continues, the election may be affected, and that would also affect the future of the youths, who he said have a greater stake in the future of the state.
Nwobi in an address said: “Firstly, I want to introduce this youth group, which is the legislative arms of the youth body. We wish to condemn the wanton destruction of lives and property ahead of the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election.
“It’s indeed very unfortunate that our youths are being used by politicians to destroy the peace that has been existing in the state. Anambra State is a very peaceful state that believes in the mutual coexistence of each other not withstanding the political affiliation.”
The group described security situation in the state as being political, adding that “the new trend of electoral violence being experienced in our State Anambra is allien to our culture and tradition”.
It reminded the youths of the state that the bright future they seek was already at hand, adding that the election could be an avenue to achieve it. It urged them to shun violence, and not to destroy the state because of the inordinate desire of the politicians who have no interest of the youths at heart.
“I therefore wants to use this medium to advise Anambra Youths to shun all forms of electoral violence ahead of the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election. Election is not war,” Nwobi said.
