EDITORIAL: Naming Airport Road After Obiano: An Insufficient Tribute

EDITORIAL

By Tony Okafor

The recent decision to name the Anambra Airport Road after former Governor Willie Obiano, now known as Willie Obiano Boulevard, is a gesture that, while well-intentioned, falls short of acknowledging his profound impact on the state’s development.

Considering his achievements during his tenure, it is essential to reassess how his legacy is being recognized.

One of Obiano’s most notable achievements is the construction of the Anambra Airport, which was later named Chinua Achebe International Airport by incumbent Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, a project that had been in the works for decades since the Oba Airport proposal.

This monumental feat warrants a more significant tribute, reflecting his contributions to Anambra State’s growth and development.

The airport’s construction showcases Obiano’s vision and leadership.

A closer examination of Obiano’s governance reveals a leader prioritizing Anambra State’s infrastructure and institutions. The International Convention Centre in Awka demonstrates his commitment to cultural exchange, economic growth, and social development.

These achievements reflect his dedication to the state’s progress and willingness to invest in its future.

Given Obiano’s profound impact, it is surprising the airport road is the only notable project named after him.

A more comprehensive recognition of Obiano’s legacy would be to name the airport itself after him, considering his instrumental role in its construction.

Other significant projects, like major roads, public buildings, or infrastructure, could also be named after him. This would provide a more fitting tribute to his selfless service and enduring legacy.

Obiano’s leadership style and legacy are worth emulating. He demonstrated humility and selflessness by not naming notable projects after himself, showcasing his commitment to the state’s development over personal gain.

In contrast, Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration has launched and named numerous projects under the “Solution” brand, effectively and indirectly naming them after himself.

While immortalizing Obiano is a step in the right direction, more substantial recognition of his legacy is needed.

By naming significant projects after him, we can inspire others to serve the state with similar dedication and vision.

This tribute should ignite a renewed discussion on recognizing individuals who have significantly contributed to Anambra State’s growth and development, such as Peter Obi and Dr. Chris Ngige, both of whom have played pivotal roles in the state’s history.
